RS Components marks 18 in ’18 for the 5% club

The distributor joined in 2018 and has already established 18 new apprenticeships, all completing or working towards a STEM-based degree or qualification. The apprentices are studying metrology with the National Physical Laboratory in London, data analytics with Arch Apprentices, IT, including software development via the National College for Digital Skills (Ada) and one third is completing an engineering qualification.

The 5% Club was established in 2013 and is supported by the UK Government’s Apprenticeship Levy. Companies in the Club are drawn from a range of markets and industry sectors, including Network Rail, Rolls-Royce the Ministry of Defence, and SMEs across the UK.

Mike England, President EMEA at RS wants to smash the five year target: “We are already putting plans in place and challenging ourselves to meet the target of having 5% of UK employees in ‘earn and learn’ positions by the end of 2019, which would be well within two years of joining this initiative,” he said.

RS also operates its own apprenticeship scheme to provide access to training for existing employees, at any age or grade up to a master’s degree. It includes a redesigned coaching programme in partnership with WhiteHat and Mind Gym for front line managers  and an externally delivered master’s degree in accountancy.

Once trained, skills should be celebrated. Electronics Weekly, in partnership with RS Components, has announced the EW BrightSparks programme for 2019 to highlight the brightest and most talented young electronics engineers in the UK today.

Now in its third year, EW BrightSparks is looking for the young engineers who are already making a difference in the first years of their working life, or who are still studying but are showing the promise to become the people behind big future innovations in electronics. Enter a colleague that has impressed, or enter yourself to show the progress you have made and the support received.
